<image:title>News - Biology Mentoring Blog - Biology Advising Blog: In 2020, widespread COVID-19 infections led many global citizens to work from home. One of them, Dr. E. Travis David, searched the internet daily during the pandemic for clear cut, credible content. The Biology Department Senior Lab Tech then decided to start a blog called symBIOsis on the department’s website. Travis curates the blog in a way that candidly communicates science based information to a captive virtual audience. Blog posts feature a mix of topics in the biological sciences meant for career scientists, graduate researchers, undergraduate students, and novices. It also covers international research, new technologies, educational opportunities, career options, and general guidance with real world applications. Now an integral part of Dr. David’s work, readers from all backgrounds can gain educational content in accessible way. For informative material with positive impact, visit the symBIOsis blog at http://symbiosis.qwriting.qc.cuny.edu.</image:title>

<image:caption>Dr. Holtzman values quality education at all levels. She has taught bio105, the first of the biology classes for the major at Queens College, City University of New York. With support from a Department of Education HSI-STEM grant, she demonstrated that targeted pedagogical changes significantly improved student outcomes in this introductory course. As the Associate Director of the Queens College, Center for Teacher and Learning for 5 years Dr. Holtzman focused on training faculty in educational pedagogy though workshops, seminars and online courses. A second educational focus area was developing cross campus quantitative reasoning curriculum, a historic area of weakens for our students. In the summer of 2020, Dr. Holtzman became the Chair of the Biology Department and is providing support for faculty during the COVID required transition to online learning and return to research on campus. In the summer of 2021, Dr. Holtzman began serving as the Associate Provost for Innovation and Student Success.</image:caption>

Organogenesis requires the specification of diverse cell types and a variety of coordinated cellular movements, cell shape changes, and cellular interactions. Small changes in any of these steps caused by genetic defects, disease and environmental toxin exposure can lead to devastating consequences on organ formation and function, which can ultimately lead to the death of the animal.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dr. Holtzman is an Associate Professor and currently serves as the Associate Provost of Innovation and Student Success at Queens College. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto before moving on to her PhD at the University of Oregon where she studied cell migration during gastrulation in zebrafish. This work led to an interest in organ formation which was the focus of her post doc with Dr. Yelon at the NYU School of Medicine. Since 2005, Dr. Holtzman has been a faculty member at Queens College, City University of New York studying heart development and aquatic toxicology. A full CV can be found here.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Many environmental contaminants end up in our worlds waterways, from rivers to the ocean. In some cases, these contaminants impact animal development and survival. Zebrafish are a laboratory model organism that is very useful for understanding the mechanism that cause the observed developmental defects caused by these environmental contaminants. Dr. Holtzman’s lab focuses on the impact of PCBs in the waterways around New York City on fish development. The lab have assessed the impact of a set of PCBs on zebrafish development including cardiac and pancreas defects and then explored the impact of these PCBs on more environmentally relevant and endangered sturgeon. The goal is to understand the molecular mechanisms driving the observed developmental defects resulting from PCB exposure. [URL]</image:caption>

The epicardium is know known to play an important role in cardiac wound healing and regeneration. Dr. Holtzman’s lab explores the unique method of epicardial migration onto the heart surface and its further maturation as the epicardial cells contribute to a wide range of cardiac cell types.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Formation of the heart occurs in a series of molecular and morphological steps requiring interactions between the endocardium (innermost layer) and the myocardium (muscular layer) of the heart. Dr. Holtzman’s lab is interested in how biomechanics plays a role in this processes, as signals from the flow of blood are interpreted by the endocardium which then signals the myocardium. Using the a zebrafish mutation that disrupts atrial contraction, the lab assesses the impact on the gene regulation of cardiac morphogenesis. [URL] [URL]</image:caption>
